Phases of Self
This painting (along with “The In-Between”) was created after giving birth. A new phase of self had entered the delivery room, one I had never met before. As the baby girl was delivered and given to her family (as a surrogate I was simply a portal to bring her here), I felt a disconnect from who I was when I entered that delivery room, becoming a new woman, once again a part of the tribe, remembering how the feminine do the impossible: splitting in half as they bring in new life.
This life is made up of phases—morning and night, entering the delivery room and exiting, sun and moon, life before and life after.
